Biography

Sankara Mahesh, MD, FRCS (G) is a board-certified ophthalmologist specializing in cornea, anterior segment surgery, and uveitis. He serves as Vice Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology and Residency Program Director at New York Medical College, where he is actively involved in clinical care, education, and mentorship of future ophthalmologists.

Dr. Mahesh’s clinical expertise encompasses cornea and external diseases, ocular immunology, and complex cataract and anterior segment disorders. His areas of special interest include keratoconus and corneal cross-linking, infectious keratitis, full-thickness and lamellar corneal transplantation, complex cataract surgery, ocular surface reconstruction, custom iris implantation, and immune-mediated eye diseases.

He completed fellowship training in cornea and external diseases at Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia. He also pursued a research fellowship in ocular immunology at the National Institutes of Health, along with additional advanced fellowship training in cornea and anterior segment diseases at the LV Prasad Eye Institute in Hyderabad, India. Dr. Mahesh completed ophthalmology residencies at both George Washington University in Washington, DC, and the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi, India.

Dr. Mahesh is a Diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology and serves as an examiner and member of the Cornea Examination Development Committee. He is an active member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Cornea Society, and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons. He is the recipient of the prestigious Zimmerman Award for Excellence in Ophthalmology and has been consistently recognized among Top Doctors.

Dr. Mahesh’s practice philosophy centers on patient education and shared decision-making. He believes that empowering patients with knowledge is essential to achieving the best possible outcomes and long-term eye health.
