Biography
Fawaz Al-Mufti, MD, is a world-renowned, award-winning, triple-board-certified neurologist, neurointensivist, and neuroendovascular surgeon with expertise in the treatment of complex neurological and neurovascular conditions.
After graduating from medical school in Iraq and serving with Doctors Without Borders (Médecins Sans Frontières) in emergency medicine, Dr. Al-Mufti completed his internship at Harvard, followed by specialty training in neurology at SUNY Stony Brook, neurocritical care at Columbia University and Weill Cornell, and neuroendovascular surgery at Rutgers University.
Dr. Al-Mufti joined Westchester Medical Center in 2018 and currently serves as Director of the Neuroendovascular Surgery Fellowship, Director of the Neurocritical Care Unit, and founding Director of the Center for Neuroscience Research and Innovation. At New York Medical College, he is Associate Dean for Research and Innovation, Vice Chair of Neurology for Research, and Professor of Neurology, Neurosurgery, and Radiology.
Dr. Al-Mufti specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of complex neurological and neurovascular conditions, including stroke, brain aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), carotid artery disease, intracranial vascular disease, and other disorders of the blood vessels of the brain and spine. His training in neurology, neurocritical care, and neuroendovascular surgery allows him to care for patients throughout the course of their illness, from diagnosis and medical management to critical care and minimally invasive endovascular treatment.
Dr. Al-Mufti has authored more than 400 peer-reviewed publications and has designed and led national and international clinical trials focused on improving the treatment of stroke and other complex neurovascular diseases. He serves as Principal Investigator for multiple multicenter studies and has mentored more than 200 students, residents, fellows, physicians, and investigators.
He is active in several national and international professional organizations. Dr. Al-Mufti serves as Chair of the American Academy of Neurology's Interventional Neurology Section and as Treasurer and a Board Member of the Society of Vascular and Interventional Neurology (SVIN). He is also Global Chair and Executive Director of SVIN Mission Thrombectomy & Neurointervention, an international initiative working to improve access to stroke and neurointerventional care around the world.
Dr. Al-Mufti has received numerous honors for his contributions to medicine, patient care, and research. He has been named a Castle Connolly Top Doctor and Super Doctor and is listed in Marquis Who's Who in Medicine. In 2026, he was recognized by Crain's New York Business as a Notable Leader in Health and by Westchester Magazine as a Health Care Hero. He has also received the Westchester Business Journal's Doctors Without Boundaries Award. His academic honors include election to Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society and Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Honor Society.
Dr. Al-Mufti's early work with Doctors Without Borders in conflict zones and resource-limited settings continues to influence the way he practices medicine. He believes that advanced technology and specialized expertise must always be accompanied by compassion. His philosophy is simple: every patient should be treated first as a person, and always as family. He places a strong emphasis on communication, patient education, multidisciplinary care, and shared decision-making so that patients and their families understand their condition and remain actively involved in their care.
